Since so many neighborhood people have been coming to the Market asking for spaces to sell "miscellaneous", we thought that a Flea Market would be a good draw. And we were right!
Our first weekend Flea Market, on October 27th, drew about 7 vendors selling everything from jewelry to candles to holiday foods.
Flea Markets will run every weekend starting November 24th, through December 22nd. Price is $10/day. Call (718) 384-1371 if you're interested. We're limited to 10 vendors, so first come, first served!

Update on Urban Farm Project at 104 Moore Street
So we presented the plans for the urban farm project to the Land Use Committee of Community Board One last week and we expected that the project would get a great reception. We were asking for a letter of support for the project that NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) had requested. So we were caught off guard by push back from two housing organizations that felt the lot was better used as a housing site. We did our best to explain that the lot could be taken back by HPD if they decided to build housing there in the future, but one of the housing groups serving on the committee voted against our request for support.
Thanks to District Manager Gerald Esposito for trying to help us come to a rational conclusion and to Land Use Committee Chair Heather Roslund for keeping the discussion focused and balanced.
Yemi Amu and Jonathan Boe, the farmers we are working with, made a video about what local people think of 104 Moore St. sitting as a vacant lot and what they think of a garden coming. The link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh821JsE9b8
Bottom line, I think we'll get the letter, but with restrictions instituted by those two committee members.
I guess green space in this community is considered wasted space by some people.
Go figure!

We're Open for Business!!
The Market sustained virtually no damages in the storm -- a vent cap blew off on the roof, but was easily retrieved and replaced -- and we are open for business as usual starting today!
We spent the weekend preparing 450 Halloween Candy bags for the kids of PS 257 (with help from my niece Emily), but with school closed today, we hope that Halloween is "rescheduled" for Friday so we can give it away before I eat it all myself!
In the meantime, come by and enjoy the Market, and meet our new vendor, Jose Colon, of All Star Cuts, a new unisex hair salon. He's done a major renovation of his space and it looks great!
Happy Halloween!

The Return of the Pushcart!!
So I commissioned Chris Ucciardino, a very talented carpenter, to build us a prototype "pushcart" that can be rented to vendors on a daily, weekend or full-time basis. Chris and I looked online for all sorts of models, and he came up with one of his own design that is not only pleasing to look at, but very utilitarian. We have designed these carts to be moved around the market, both inside and outside, and they have lots of storage and display space. The prototype is still bare wood, but the finished product will have a blackboard front, to display the current vendor's name, and the balance will have a wood stain.
Four carts should be ready for rental by Thanksgiving -- if you're interested in renting one (or buying one directly from Chris), give us a call!
